Using the Ricoh GR3 as a Travel Photography Camera
This is how I used the Ricoh GRIII as my only travel photography camera in a short trip to the Amazon to keep my setup light and my mind on the trip itself.
Knowing the camera: I’ve used this camera for years already and, I might not know all the ins and outs of it, but I can handle it pretty well. Knowing what its settings do and where to go when I needed to change something was very important to not lose time and get the most out of it.
Shooting modes: I shot RAW or, when using film simulation recipes, RAW + JPEG. So, film simulation recipes are IN nowadays, but, to have freedom to correct what I wanted, I decided to shoot RAW 99% of the time. I figured I can get the film simulation style later, when I have more time to think what I wanted.
Mind its purpose: Being mindful of the its limitations or, rather, its purpose. I knew that with a Ricoh GRIII I will not be shooting any animal close up with extreme bokeh, so I avoided trying to do that. I’ve tried that before and it didn’t go well, I just I ended being demotivated. Instead I almost used it as a street photography camera to capture the locals, landscape and do some abstract shots.
Hope you like my insights. In the end, this camera is very versatile and I could’ve use it in many other ways, so I’ll keep exploring it.
